Julia Cogdell, LMSW

Licensed Master Social Worker in Virginia

Julia Cogdell (she/her) is a Licensed Master Social Worker with a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities. She is dedicated to advocating for those in need and providing a safe space for individuals to explore their challenges, heal, and grow. Julia’s therapeutic approach is rooted in empathy, compassion, and patience. She is committed to providing culturally sensitive, accessible, and equitable mental health care and believes in the power of human resilience and the potential for change in every person’s life.

Julia employs evidence-based practices and tailors her approach to meet the unique needs of each client. Working with Julia, clients will recognize the importance she places on hearing their stories and gaining an understanding of the various stressors that impact them. They will find comfort in her openness and willingness to learn about their challenges, and how her role can be one of support and fostering healing. Her approach blends cognitive/behavioral, and trauma-focused therapy, along with mindfulness practices. She enjoys working with diverse populations and is open to working with teens and adults, in person, or virtually in Virginia.

Julia previously worked as a maternity care specialist supporting research efforts focused on perinatal mental health and addressing social determinants of health. Her experiences span the spectrum of research, clinical work, social services, and healthcare environments. In her clinical work, she supported individuals from 16 to 75+ years helping them navigate chronic illness, depression, life transitions, anxiety, and low self-esteem. She also has non-profit organization experience working with teens and young adults to help them secure resources and stable housing.

Julia earned her bachelor’s degree in neuroscience with a minor in psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree at NYU.

Julia values her time with friends whether it be traveling, trying new foods, or a “night in” watching movies. She loves the beach but will settle for sitting by a cozy fire with a good book and the family dog when it’s cold. Julia is passionate about social work advocacy and engaging in community initiatives and programs that address social inequalities. She believes in the importance of working both inside and outside the therapy room to create positive change in the lives of those she serves.
