About This Course
This 2-hour continuing education course equips social workers and mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide effective, culturally competent care to survivors of sexual abuse from insular communities. Drawing from real-world case examples, current research, and clinical best practices, the course explores the cultural, social, and historical dynamics that can both support and harm individuals within closed or tightly knit groups.
Participants will learn how community structures, belief systems, and informal justice mechanisms can enable abuse, silence victims, and prioritize collective preservation over individual safety. The training also examines the unique barriers survivors face in seeking help, including fear of ostracism, loss of identity, and mistrust of outside systems.
