Bernita Oakes, MA, NCC, CTP

Resident in Counseling in Virginia

Bernita Oakes (she/her) is a Resident in Counseling in Virginia who is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing space for adults faced with life’s challenges. A compassionate, strength-based, and trauma-informed approach that reflects empathy and non-judgment will be at the core of your sessions with her. This therapeutic space is a sanctuary for those who seek to gain a better understanding of themselves. Through a mix of relational, psychodynamic, and attachment-based lenses, together you’ll explore thought patterns, relationship patterns, and internal narratives/beliefs.

Sessions with Bernita will encourage a deeper understanding of how past experiences have formed your present understanding of yourself. Through self-exploration, Bernita aims to inspire self-awareness, self-compassion, growth, and healing.

Bernita has experience supporting adults by helping them navigate anxiety, depression, trauma across the lifespan, low self-esteem, and relationship challenges in a private practice environment. Some of the therapeutic approaches she incorporates into her practice are based on her training of 60+ hours in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Brainspotting – Level 1 Training, as well as training in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Bernita earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. She completed her master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of the Cumberlands.

Bernita loves spending time with her husky/malamute mix, Indiana “Indy” Jones. Other things that light her up: meeting up with friends, family outings, time at the beach, and walks in the woods with her pup. She uses art, yoga, and sound baths to integrate creativity, balance, and calm into her life.

If you’re looking for a therapist, Bernita is Good Company!
